Christmas Letter 2013

Greetings from cold & snowy, Bend, OR! As I type this, we have snow on the ground, a half decorated Christmas tree, and a pile of Christmas gifts to wrap.   I am realizing that writing this annual letter gets harder and harder every year... These annual letters don't really paint the whole picture of our life and it usually sounds like life is just always 100% pleasant and everyone is happy, but I hope that most readers know that this letter usually reflects only the highlights and we don't bother you with the 75% of other stuff that goes on (like the way I backed into our garage door when it was half open ... or  when I flooded our downstairs by keeping the laundry room sink plugged and faucet on and left the house for nearly 2 hours.... or the way Aaron nearly killed our whole family when he slid on ice driving while brushing his teeth, but somehow managed to keep brushing his teeth while going through the sidewalk between a rock and a yield sign... or when I dis...

Portland Marathon 2013 (My First ever Marathon Recap)

I wanted to capture my moment by moment FIRST marathon experience so here goes: I'll start with the night before: We went over to Aaron's parents house to have some dinner with them as well as Micah & Danielle (Aaron's brother and wife) and their kids, Gabriel and Grace, and Mathew and Taylor (cousins of our kids).   We got back to our hotel (Hilton downtown) around 7:15pm and I organized my outfit for the big day while Aaron took the kids swimming at the pool.  I agonized back and forth about whether to carry my Nathan hydration vest or not for a week and Aaron finally helped me make the decision that although the aid stations were going to be plenty, I should go ahead and carry my own water.... because he knows that  1) I don't like stopping to get water even if it's a moment because I feel like I lose momentum 2) I am really BAD at drinking from the cups and have gotten multiple water sloshes up my nose (which hurts!) and water on my shoes (which, is BA...

Beautiful Battlefields

I wanted to deviate from what can become a boring recap of daily events in Maui to write a bit about a book released fairly recently by someone I know in Bend. Her name is Bo Stern. She is one of the pastors at Westside Church where we attend, a mother of 4, and her youngest child, a son, is a great friend of my son Calvin... She's also a grandma ( a really young looking one) and she is also a wife to Steve Stern, who was diagnosed with ALS(Lou Gehrig's disease). Bo has always been one of those passionate, authentic speakers that the Holy Spirit seems to always use to encourage, convict, enlighten me and I have always walked away from her messages either changed or desperately wanting to be changed. All of that prior to Steve's diagnosis. Since his diagnosis, to me, she's become even more passionate, real and now I find I cry just thinking about her messages, her life and now, reading this book. Aaron and I have read this book cover to cover already but we are going...

Maui Day 4

We went to Starbucks this morning as usual, but didn't run but walked instead. We sighted many whales breaching... It truly is an amazing sight. After our coffee, we got the kids and decided to go for a walk on the beach and ran into the Desmonds from Bend! We talked with them for a bit and then went to the store because Michael wanted to make some hash browns and sausage for breakfast. We kinda did the usual hanging out .. (Pool, coffee, Golf) Aaron's been able to go on long bike rides in the afternoon and listen to his favorite podcasts while riding. Papa and Grandma offered to make the kids dinner so Aaron & I could go out so we went to our favorite place... Hula Grill.

Maui Day 3 Rain

This morning we ran from the condo to Starbucks and back, which was a little over 6 miles. It was pouring down rain most of the way there and back... It brought back memories of warm rainy season in Okinawa. Unfortunately it rained most of the day and only reached a high of about 70. I went to the pool to warm up in the hot tub, but the hot tub was not working :( so we pretty much did things around the condo. At one point we walked over to a nearby park, but it was actually too cold with just shorts on so we played golf on the putting green and the boys played cards with Grandma. Here are some pics from our day

Maui, Day 2

We woke up a tad bit later than yesterday...went on a mini run (only 2 miles total) sat at Starbucks and saw a cute little bird join our table. (Picture to follow) . It's whale season here so we enjoyed watching whales during our coffee time and throughout the day. They have been putting on quite a show. After our run we took a drive to Lahaina and walked around, got some gelato and window shopped. Went to Duke's for dinner and Papa made his famous bananas foster for dessert.

Maui Day 1

We had a great 1st day... Started out the morning at 3:30am... (Couldn't sleep due to time change). Aaron & I ended up doing our PT exercises and then headed out on our run to Starbucks. It was so great to be back enjoying our morning coffee in the total quiet and peace(and WARMTH) of Maui. Aaron's parents are here also and made us dinner on our first evening (last night). After running 4 miles, we headed back and the kids were awake so we went to the coffee place in Honokowai (Bad Ass Coffee) and ate papayas while Noah watched the girls at the beach. Noah and Aaron went shopping for some groceries while the rest of us hung out at the pool. Around 4, we went to dinner at Hula Grill with Aaron's parents then walked around Whaler's Village. Here are some pics from today
